The fire, at 232 Maplewood Ave., in Bridgeport, was first reported around 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6, after the Emergency Management Center, received numerous calls reporting heavy fire with the possibility of occupants still inside, said Terron Jones, spokesman for the Bridgeport Police and Fire departments.

Firefighters immediately responded and found heavy fire coming from the front and back of the building on arrival.

A search of all floors failed to turn up anyone stranded inside, as the power was shut off to the building to assist with firefighting efforts, Jones said.

Red Cross was notified for 14 adults and three children who were left homeless following the blaze, Jones said.

The Greater Bridgeport Transit was also called to provide temporary shelter due to the low temperatures.

The Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation and no injuries were reported.
